From September 22-24, 2017, Mangalam Center and Dharma College had the honor of hosting the 4th International Tipitaka Chanting Ceremony in Berkeley, California. Coordinated and sponsored by the Light of Buddhadharma Foundation International, the event began with a Peace Walk procession from the Nyingma Institute, through the campus of University of California, Berkeley to Mangalam Center. Over 100 eminent Theravadin monks and nuns from the Burmese, Cambodian, Laotian, Thai, Sri Lankan and Vietnamese Buddhist traditions, as well as the Tibetan and Zen traditions, attended the three-day event, along with many lay Buddhist practitioners from around the Bay Area. Evening Dharma talks at Dharma College featured learned and eminent great masters in the Theravada tradition speaking about topics of interest. The event was dedicated to the longevity of Tarthang Tulku on the occasion of his 83rd birthday.

The Tipitaka (three baskets) contains the teachings given by the Buddha in his lifetime and was chanted in the ancient period to preserve the teachings until they were committed to written form.  This year, the Mahasangha chanted from sections of the Dighanikaya.
